V. Superintendent Informational Report
Presenter:
Greg Eding
Description:
It is hard to believe that we are already six weeks into the school year. As I have spent time in our buildings and classrooms, I continue to be encouraged by the work taking place across the District. Our staff has settled into the school year well, and our continued focus is on creating strong learning environments for students while supporting the people doing the work each day.
One area that continues to be a priority is strengthening teaching and learning throughout the District. Our Elementary Leadership Team recently participated in Adaptive Schools training, providing our teacher leaders with additional strategies for facilitating groups, building consensus, working through disagreement, and keeping teams focused on genuine inquiry and student learning. We are also continuing to prepare for Michigan's upcoming dyslexia and structured literacy requirements. While those requirements do not fully take effect until the 2027–28 school year, our elementary work has positioned us well, and we have now begun expanding that learning to our secondary staff with support from Berrien RESA.
I am also excited about the continued partnership we have with the Lakeshore Excellence Foundation. The LEF recently approved $750,000 in funding for four significant projects: classroom safety and emergency kits, professional development connected to District programs, Unified Sports programming, and a Robotics and Professional Development Center. I had an opportunity at the MASA Conference to attend a session featuring students involved in Unified Sports in Bath, Michigan. Seeing the impact of that program and making connections with people at the state level made me even more excited about bringing Unified Sports to Lakeshore.
We are also continuing to look for ways to improve our systems and communication with families. This month, we signed an agreement to begin implementing BusRight, a transportation management system that includes route planning, driver navigation, live GPS tracking, and improved parent communication.
And finally, this past Friday we had a full day of professional development that was sponsored by Berrien RESA and hosted at Lake Michigan College.  There were over 1500 educators in attendance, all from Berrien County.  It was a great day of learning and collaboration with fellow colleagues from area schools.  This is the third year that the RESA has put this day together and it has improved each year!
Overall, I continue to feel very positive about the start of the 2026–27 school year. There is a tremendous amount of good work happening throughout Lakeshore, and I appreciate the commitment of our staff, and the continued focus on providing the best possible experience for our students.

VI.A. Facilities & Finance Comm.
Presenter:
Griffin Ott
Description:
The Facilities and Finance Committee, consisting of Rachel Wade, Lori VonKoenig, Tracy Althouse, Greg Eding, Jake Scott, and Griffin Ott met on October 8th.  Trace presented the monthly financials including the investment summary, cash flows as well as the September cash receipts and expenditures.  She discussed how the budget amendment as well as the projected fall student count will affect 2026-27 cash flows. Jake and Tracy discussed the baseball turf which was last done in 2016. It has been projected to be redone this fall with Sinking Fund dollars. Turf is recommended to be replaced between 8–10 years. We will be asking the Board to approve AstroTurf redoing our baseball turf tonight.  Bond schedules were presented showing our total interest made to date, all our spend to date by vendor, as well as project listing.   Tracy discussed the differential between budgeted projects and projected revenue remaining.  Jake and Tracy will be presenting the committee with potential projects in the upcoming months. Greg led a discussion on 31aa categorical funds. We will be discussing the interests of accepting or declining the funds at a future Board meeting.  Until a decision is reached, Tracy will remove the school safety portion from the budget.  Tracy also presented Budget Modification #1. We are showing additional fund balance usage as our student count was lower than projected by approximately 35 students. Some of the decrease in foundation allowance will be "made up" with the new 3-year enrollment weighted average categorical.  It was noted that many of these were from students moving out of the area.  In addition, the 31aa school safety portion of funding was removed.  Increases in expenses included new bus transportation and enrollment software, as well as various updates to staffing for insurance.
