6.A. Westfield Student Spotlight: The Westfield Student Spotlight recognizes Westfield’s accreditation in 2026 as a Level I Arboretum – one of the few schools in DuPage County to earn this recognition. The designation is eight years and more than 30 trees in the making under the guidance and vision of LMC Director Karl Mennecke. The Arboretum project started when a white oak tree was planted in 2018 to honor the school’s 50th anniversary and Illinois’ 200th anniversary. Since then, Mennecke, the Westfield Garden Club students and staff have worked tirelessly to fulfill application requirements for the Arboretum program, including planting and labeling at least 25 different varieties of trees on the school arboretum grounds, as well as organizing and presenting an annual public education event, Oaktober. Westfield Garden Club students continue to be involved with planting and caring for all of the new trees in the Westfield Arboretum.

6.B. Community Spotlight: CCSD 89 honors community members who give back to students and staff members through their volunteer service. We would like to recognize the efforts of the Briarcliffe Blazers Black 9U youth baseball team, who over the summer organized a school supply drive to benefit CCSD 89. With help from Park View 2nd grade teacher Kelly Keippel, team members including students from both Briar Glen and Park View collected and organized a large donation of school supplies for students in need to start the year. The district appreciates this generous donation and recognizes all players, coaches and their families for their initiative to support CCSD 89 students.

6.C. Briar Glen Evacuation and Reunification: Thank you to our Briar Glen staff, District office staff, Building principals, COD law enforcement and personnel, parents, and students for your efforts in responding to an unsafe situation at Briar Glen by evacuating students to a safer location, and reuniting each students with an authorized family member, guardian, or listed emergency contact. It definitely took a village, and I appreciate how well everyone responded. I was especially proud of the calmness from staff, students, and parents throughout the event.

6.D. Start of the Year: Thank you to all the students, staff, parents, bus drivers, maintenance, PTC leaders, and community members for a great start to the school year. We are off to a good start and I appreciate all that you do to continue to make this a great district.

6.E. 2026 Illinois Association of School Board (IASB) School Board Governance Recognition: The Community Consolidated School District 89 Board of Education has been honored for its board members’ commitment to effective governance and obtaining the knowledge to effectively lead the district. CCSD 89 was one of less than 50 school boards across the state to earn the 2026 School Board Governance Recognition honor from the Illinois Association of School Boards (IASB). The award is a two-year honorary distinction in recognition of its exemplary governance behaviors focused on full board development and participation; the CCSD 89 Board also received this honor in 2024.
