6.a. Walker Valley High School Food Pantry - WVHS students of Ms. Klepzig
Discussion:
Students from Walker Valley High told the Board about the Food Pantry that was opened in January 2018 at their school. Since they started they have fed 16 different students, 3 families over the summer, and provided 70 sac packs to feed children. At Walker Valley there are 502 students out of 1518 that qualify for free and reduced meals. These are students that might not have access to food except for the meal they get at school. 52% of all meals served in Bradley County Schools cafeterias are free and reduced. According to these numbers there is a need in Bradley County to help hungry children. United Way provides sac packs to elementary schools for weekends and over breaks but there is nothing for the middle and high schools. Their goal is to help open food pantries in other schools. They went on to tell the Board that they created a google doc for students to be able to annoumusly place an order for a sac pack. When the student places their order they are given a locker number. The sponsor places the order in the locker and the student can retrieve it at any time during the next day. The Walker Valley students are willing to help other schools start their own Food Bank so each school can take care of their own students. The biggest problem at Walker Valley has been getting the word out. |
