Discussion:
The Board of Education of Hermantown Independent School District No. 700 met in regular session on February 9, 2026. Vice Chair, Matthew Munger, called the meeting to order at 6:01 P.M.

VII.A. Elementary, Middle, High School, and Community Education Reports
Discussion:
Muenich. Congratulated Thomas Moore and the High School Math League team as they are headed to state next Monday. The team includes Nick Tarnowski, Molly White, Colton Magnuson, Paul Marinos, Brent Peterson, Madison White, Ezechukwu Enemuoh, Grady Masterman, and Max Lederer
Wietman. Recognized Brittney Harrison and Ken Ahlberg for the Middle School choir concert. There was a lot of personalization to it. Looking forward to the band concert next Tuesday. Appelwick. The elementary staff is getting report cards ready for Elementary conferences. Also, looking forward to hosting the Book fair this week. Berg. Preschool and ECSE registration opened last Monday and most classes are full or half full. Recognized Sarah Dennis for her work during the process. Whitwam. Congratulated Bryce Francisco on winning the Frank Brimsek Award, which is given to the state's best senior goalie. Also recognized the boys hockey team for earning MHCA Academic State Champion accolades for having a state-best 3.86 cumulative GPA. |

Elementary Principal Gretchen Appelwick gave an update on the reading corps mid-year report.

Down two students at the high school.

Discussion:
Need to plan another work session. Since two Board members are gone, tonight would not work.

Discussion:
Robert Miller spoke about the American Indian Education program. Seniors will receive a blanket and will have a celebratory dinner following graduation. Looking to sit down with principals to build up the ideas and culture with the students at all grade levels. Will implement traveling chests or educational chests with artifacts and a lesson plans inside of them. Teachers sign them out and take them to the classrooms and use them. It gives them lessons back to different cultures.
Northern Lights Academy will be renting space from Cloquet at the Garfield Building. Signing a five-year lease. No longer going for bonding. |

Discussion:
Griffith. Community Ed meeting. Movement of head start out of the HCLC building started with a room need at Pike Lake in Proctor and being able to retain our current staff. In Hermantown, the decision was not made lightly.
