G. Separate Items

G.1. Consider Adoption of Pre-K Textbooks
Description:
Proclamation 2021 calls for the adoption of instructional materials for English and Spanish prekindergarten systems. To be eligible for adoption, instructional materials must cover at least 50% of the end-of-the-year outcomes in each domain of the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines, must comply with applicable manufacturing standards, and be free from factual errors at the time they are delivered to schools.
The first step in the process was to establish a Textbook Adoption Committee. The members consisted of all prekindergarten and early childhood special education teachers. Fourteen publishers submitted materials for consideration. Only ten of those publishers submitted English and Spanish materials for consideration. Four publishers with English only materials were immediately eliminated from consideration. All ten of the remaining publishers were contacted to send samples for the textbook adoption team to preview. All Textbook Adoption Committee members were asked to register to virtually attend an Instructional Materials Preview through Region 11 and to preview instructional materials. The prekindergarten curriculum writing team members, Katherine Adair, Kendra Benedict, Claudia Myers, virtually attended the preview along with Dr. Karen Gonzales on November 30 and December 1, 2020 and evaluated materials with a detailed rubric. Rubric data was shared with the Textbook Adoption Committee and they narrowed the selection to their top four publishers: Benchmark Education, Frog Street, Saavas Learning Company, and Scholastic. On January 4, 2021, the Textbook Adoption Committee met to examine the top four instructional materials in greater depth. During the week of January 12, 2021, the Textbook Adoption Committee electronically voted on their top selection of instructional materials. Frog Street was selected as the number one choice for adoption based on it's alignment to the Texas Prekindergarten Guidelines, wide variety of authentic English and Spanish literature, hands-on learning center suggestions including STEAM, online digital resources, formative assessments, social emotional learning with Conscious Discipline, and multiple letter instruction each week. Therefore, we would like to adopt Frog Street for the next 8 years. |
