Agenda Item Type:
Consent Item
Discussion:
The Smith County Schools Technology Department requests permission to apply for the FY2025 USDA Rural Utility Services Distance Learning and Telemedicine Grant (RUS-DLT). This competitive program provides up to $1,000,000 to help rural communities use advanced telecommunications technology to connect to each other and the world in order to overcome the effects of remoteness and low population density. This reimbursement grant requires a 15% match to be repaid over the course of the 3-year implementation. We intend to use these potential grant funds to purchase interactive flat panels and video conferencing equipment for classrooms at Smith County High School, Gordonsville High School, and Smith County Middle School to increase student access to advanced academic courses, dual enrollment courses, CTE courses, remote learning opportunities, and telemedicine services. Teachers would also benefit from increased collaboration with colleagues and professional development opportunities. Applications for additional schools would be made in future funding years if the initial funding application is successful.
