4.A. Adjust School Calendar Due to Inclement Weather (ACTION)
Presenter:
Gerry C. Washburn, Superintendent
Discussion:
Backgkround - years past districts 1,140 instructional hours, build calender and more time was built in - if we had to cancel a day we would look at required number of minutes. Days did not have to be made up. number of minutes is still in state statue. however when legislation k-12 plus funding is specifically to days and not minutes - you are funded by the days. You have to make up the days. We canceled and there was no plan in place for hourly staff and HR is putting together a bank of training for hourly employees. Virtualy and hourly staff can also log in and we do nothave to make up days. Rumors going around . We tried to look at calendar to finish by June and not include spring break. Ms. Shan called a committed calendar together. February 13, parent teacher conference day and Februarty 16 become virtual instructional days. can still do some conferences. May 22 (early release day) and prepare for graduation. 3 days needed to make up - staff would be February 13 come in person and on February 16. May 22 regular day. May 26 and May 27. Parent Teacher conference can make up some of the May 26 and 27. Principals will document and staff development in Special Education dept. 14 hours 40 minutes of make up time needed. Funding piece cost us $538,000.00 - 3 days + 1.6 million. - year round calendar for custodial/maintenance staff. (they only have 1 day to make up) They worked 2 of the snow days. Very grateful for that staff and how they worked. Clancey - flex days built in previous calendar. Calendar is set up to end before Memorial day - they changed the way the hours are calculated. - days had to extend days - gave up sports day. only MLK and President's day. Having us do the virtual days instead of adding on 3 days at the end. Wanting to keep our hourly people harmless. For next year. Identifying the days - in NM Ped - do not include planned make up days. - Clancey - give a break down and how hours are counted. Different guidance every year. Did everything they could to make us add days. Early release - Professional Hours learning requirements. Addding an extra hour will not help. Emily - first parent/teacher conference was done away with - encourage to still have parent/teacher conference. Be very explicit with our parents to let them know there are parent/teacher conferences will happen. Thursday evening/Friday and Monday should allow time for parent/teacher conference. teachers for 26/27 may be work toward some of the make up days needed. Expectation is we will still have parent/teacher conferences. Something in place to go virtual and not have make up days. Schedule one virtual day in the fall to make sure it works. Clancey k-12 6/6 to 7 million goes toward paying the higher salaries. Additional operational funding. not happy with virtual but needed to allow time for parent/teacher conferences. limit to virtual days allowed? 4 days MAX (by Hour) 32 hours!
