6.a. Elementary Principal Report
Rationale:
August Elementary Board ReportThe 2026-2027 school year is here, and we are excited to welcome our students and families back to Sutherland Elementary. Teachers and staff have been busy preparing classrooms, reviewing schedules, participating in professional development, and getting everything ready for a successful start to the year. AR PartyOur summer AR Party was held on August 6, with 32 students qualifying for the celebration. This was a great opportunity to recognize students for their commitment to reading and reaching their AR goals. A special thank you to Mrs. Sandberg for organizing the AR Party and helping provide a fun way to recognize our students' accomplishments. Back-to-School NightElementary Back-to-School Night will be held Tuesday, August 11. Students and families may begin visiting classrooms at 5:00 PM to meet their teachers and drop off school supplies. At 5:30 PM, families will meet in the gym for a short elementary presentation. The first day of school is Wednesday, August 12. We are looking forward to getting students back in the building and establishing strong routines from day one. Instructional Focus for 2026-2027WORDS ProjectSutherland Elementary will continue our partnership with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln WORDS Project. This work will support our teachers with research-based literacy instruction and strengthen our implementation of the Science of Reading. The WORDS Project will provide professional development and coaching as we continue strengthening explicit instruction in areas such as phonological awareness, decoding, spelling, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Building Culture One of my priorities continues to be building strong, positive relationships with both students and staff. A united staff is the foundation of a successful school. We will continue emphasizing consistency, communication, accountability, and doing what is best for students and the building as a whole. I am excited about the direction of Sutherland Elementary and look forward to another successful year. Thank you to our Board of Education, administration, staff, families, and community for the continued support of our students and school.
