9.d. 2026-2027 School Calendar Revision
Description:
Administration is recommending the removal of the January 4, 2027 in-service day, as well as a staggered start date for secondary schools. This change accounts for the added in-service day at the end of the year, increasing the number of instructional days by one to meet state requirements, and to provide an opportunity for strengthening transition supports in the 6th and 9th grades through structured orientation and peer mentoring.
A cohort of KMS and KHS administrators and teachers were trained at the end of April in this orientation program and are ready for initial implementation in the 2026-2027 school year. In other districts, this orientation program has been successful in increasing student attendance, graduation rates, and a sense of safety and connectedness, as well as reducing D/F rates, behavior referrals, and tardiness. KHS and KMS are eager to begin implementation to target these same efforts and support student success during these critical years. |
