Description:

As we approach graduation and the conclusion of our school calendar, I want to extend thanks to all who contribute to the success of our school district. Despite the challenges, the resilience, dedication, and hard work by our staff have truly made this a successful school year. I hope that staff and students enjoy a well-deserved summer break and look forward to returning this fall for an exciting new year.

10. HR/Payroll/Executive Assistant to the Superintendent Position

Description:

District Payroll/HR/Executive Assistant to the Superintendent position has been restructured. The workload demanded of the position was not sustainable. The responsibilities for payroll will be contracted with the SWWC Service Cooperative along with the business manager services. A cost analysis shows that we will still pay less in for superintendent and business office services FY 26 than was budgeted in FY 25.

The HR/Executive Assistant to the Superintendent position vacancy has been advertised. Applications are due June 6. John will conduct the interviews with Mariah and recommend a candidate for at the June 18 school board meeting. The job description for the vacant position is attached.

11. Approve 2025-26 School Calendar

Description:

Thanks to the staff members, parent, and student who assisted with the calendar committee. The leadership of Julia and Misty is also appreciated. The 25-26 calendar is similar to the 24-25 calendar in scheduling the maximum of 183 days permitted by the teachers’ contract and 171 student contact days.

In addition to the LETRS training required by law, the 25-26 calendar provides for staff development training as follows: August 25-28, November 3 - 2 hours, January 16 - 2 hours (usually a workday), February 13 - 4 hours, March 20 - 2 hours. These sessions will be used for PBIS,
ALICE, and Curriculum Development. The superintendent recommends approving the 25-26 calendar.

12. Interview Committee Middle/High School Principal

Description:

The Middle/High School Principal vacancy has been posted on the MSBA, MASA, Indeed, and MN Jobs platforms. It is also posted on our website. Applications are due May 23^rd. Interviews will be conducted on May 27 and 28 (schedule to be determined). John will lead the interview process. The interview committee will include high school teachers, Mariah, and Julia. John expects to recommend a candidate for the June 18 school board meeting.

1. The school board's role is governance, whereas the superintendent's role is management.

1. The superintendent’s contract (Malone and Cselovski), approved by the school board, specifies the duties of the superintendent including "shall select all personnel subject to the approval of the school board"

1. The MSBA recommendation for the school board’s role in hiring personal is attached and includes: "The school board...Selects and employs one person — the superintendent — as the school district’s chief executive officer to lead and manage the school district. The school board should only be involved in interviews for the superintendent; NOT other staff."

1. The school board chair could appoint a representative to observe the hiring process. As an inactive member of the interview committee, the representative could monitor the process and report back to the school board.
