5.2. Grants

5.2.a. Access Health Connecticut - Assister Grant
Rationale:
Bristol FRCs have applied for a $5,000 grant to fund an FRC staff member to be trained as an Assister to enroll uninsured families/individuals into affordable health care programs being implemented under the Affordable Care Act (ACA), a new federal health insurance law. This grants main purpose is to inform, educate and enroll anyone without health insurance coverage into an affordable health care plan. Open enrollment under the ACA law will commence on October 1. Assisters' will be trained and certified by Access Health. The FRC Assister will be able to approve and enroll individuals/families immediately. This grant is for fiscal year 2013-2014.

5.2.b. Stocker Foundation - Raising Readers Together Grant (RRT)
Rationale:
Bristol FRCs has applied for a $26,000 grant to fund a Raising Readers Together Grant implemented by the FRCs. Raising Readers Together will bring children who are significantly behind their peers up to grade level performance by end of first grade. This grant will provide (1) certified teachers as tutors for students and (2) certified parent educators teaching the students’ parents how to support their child’s emerging literacy skills utilizing SDE approved Raising Readers Curriculum. West Bristol FRC will offer both the tutoring and RR curriculum for parents. GHFRC & SSSFRC will offer just the RR curriculum for parents. The teachers, children, and parents will become literacy partners to ensure that these children who are struggling to keep up become joyful and competent readers. If funded, RRT will be implemented next fiscal year 2014-15.

5.2.c. Bristol Business Education Foundation Grant - Mentor Program
Rationale:
The Bristol Public Schools received a $2,825 grant from the Bristol Business Education Foundation to support the Mentor Program. These funds were made possible through the generosity of the Frances Dewing Foundation, Walmart and Macy’s.

5.2.d. Business Education Foundation Grant - CHMS and NEMS
Rationale:
The Bristol Public Schools received a $4,500 grant from the Bristol Business Education Foundation for the purchase of two 3-D printers for Chippens Hill MS and Northeast MS to support the Engineering/Technology curriculum.

7.1. Report on Dress Down for 2012-2013 School Year
Rationale:
The Board of Education agreed to waive the staff dress code for monthly dress down days that would benefit students and/or staff. Attached is this year’s list of charities and the monthly amount raised. Staff donated a total of $25,542.00. |
8. Policy Revision

8.1. Policy 5144.1 - Restraint/Seclusion Revision - Second Reading
Rationale:
The current Restraint/Seclusion Policy was originally adopted by the Board of Education in June 2008. Since that time, the laws regarding the use of restraint and seclusion in the public schools have changed. It is therefore necessary to update the Board of Education policy on Restraint and Seclusion to be in compliance with the current CT state statutes.
