6.1. Curriculum Revisions
|
6.1.a. Grade 8 - Science Curriculum - Second Reading
Rationale:
The grade 8 science curriculum has been revised to align student objectives with the recently released state “Grade Level Expectations,” to incorporate “Big Ideas” and “Essential Question” and to differentiate between the academic and accelerated courses. In the revised curriculum, there additional learning objectives, a greater variety of teaching strategies, and expanded assessments. The revised curriculum was presented to the Student Achievement Committee on July 29, 2009. |
6.1.b. High School English Curriculum Revision - Second Reading
Rationale:
The curriculum for English I, II, III and IV was last revised and approved in September 2006. After two years of full implementation, we recognized a need to revise the curriculum to further address content related to writing instruction. The curriculum committee has written eight additional writing units, two units per course, to incorporate into the current curriculum. In these units, students will build upon their writing skills within the writing process; learn how to write for a variety of purposes and audiences; and deepen their knowledge of strategies and content related to the act of writing.
|
6.2. Textbook Adoption
|
6.2.a. Health Textbook Adoption - First Reading
Rationale:
The new Health/Wellness curriculum was approved for grades 6, 7, and 8 in the fall of 2006. The revisions made to the curriculum align with the new Healthy and Balanced Living Curriculum Framework and the Comprehensive School Health Education document published by the State Department of Education. Since the adoption of the new curriculum, teachers have been creatively using handouts, worksheets and resources to disseminate the critical content information. There is no text book per se. With the change in the Food Pyramid, most of these resources are now outdated and incorrect. The new text being presented aligns nicely with the new state standards and our curriculum document and would become the primary resource.
The recommended textbook is: Teen Health by Mary H. Bronson, Betty M. Hubbard, Michael J. Cleary, Woodland Hills CA; McGraw-Hill Companies, 20-09. |
6.3. Policy Revisions
|
6.3.a. Policy 6145.2 - Co-Curricular Activities/Athletics - First Reading
Rationale:
Revisions to this policy are proposed in order to differentiate between co-curricular eligibility and extra- curricular eligibility and to add specific information into the policy about middle school eligibility for co-curricular and extra- curricular activities. Because we would like to implement these policy revisions at the start of the 2009-2010 school year, we are asking the Board to consider waiving the second reading of the policy. |
6.4. Participation in the National School Breakfast, Lunch and After School Snack Program 2009-2010 School Year
