IV.A. Holiday Policy
Description:
Attached please find the Holiday Policy along with sample polices from surrounding school districts.
Similar to the last meeting, I anticipate that we will have a few parents speak at the Policy Committee Meeting during public comments regarding their thoughts on the Holiday Policy. The concerns are related to how the holidays are portrayed in the schools, and including, elementary music programs. Tim Schell, Amy Johnson, and I have been in discussion about the policy and have reviewed policies from surrounding school districts that are attached for your review. We would like to provide an overview of each policy to the committee and discuss the elements that should be considered as we move forward with a draft for you to consider. As an FYI--we do like the educational parameters provided in the Middleton policy. We have also had discussions with our principals and elementary music staff on the concerns voiced by parents and they are reviewing options for the next year. On Thursday evening I suggest that we allow the parents the opportunity to share their concerns, if they choose to address the committee, and we can outline the process we will follow with a draft policy at the next meeting.

IV.B. Internet Safety and Acceptable Use Policy
Description:
Attached please find the revised Internet Safety and Acceptable Use Policy. The changes are noted within the document to align with best practice in this area and our move to a 1:1 environment in grades 5-12.
As requested at the last meeting, we have developed a separate policy for students and staff. Herb Haubrich will be in attendance at the meeting to review the highlights of the changes to this policy, and solicit your input.

IV.C. Fundraising Policy
Description:
Attached are the Fundraising Policies that the committee reviewed last summer. The changes are highlighted. At that time, the policies were not moved forward to the full board out of concern of inequity of technology and PTO fundraising for technology at the K-4 level. We have addressed the elementary technology concern this year, so we are bringing back the policies for your review. The updated polices reflect language that aligns with our new fundraising procedures per the addition of Classmunity.
Additionally, after the last Policy Committee Meeting, I convened with Aaron May, Activities Director, to discuss the "may" vs "shall" language for separate 501(c)(3) booster groups. His perspective is that it should remain as "may". The rationale being that these groups are truly separate and have their own requirements for accountability to maintain their 501(c)(3) status, and he is concerned about being able to effectively monitor and police all booster club activities if the language should change to "shall".

IV.D. Advertising Policy
Description:
Attached please find the Advertising Policies. I would like to review the Advertising Policies with the committee to be certain that your thoughts are congruent with how I am implementing this policy. Particularly I want to bring to your attention how there has been a shift in requests for advertising, distribution of materials to students, and larger donors for programs and sponsorship opportunities. The discussion may yield modifications to this policy for a future meeting.

IV.E. High School Dress Code
Description:
Attached please find the Dress Code Policy 443.1.
Brian Kersten, high school principal, has been working with his students, staff, and parents on clarifying appropriate dress at the high school. Attached is a presentation that outlines the outcome of that work and his recommendations. He would like school board endorsement of these parameters as implementation of dress codes is often received with concern from parents and students. The current handbook language regarding dress code is as follows: STUDENT DRESS CODE - School Attire: Students are expected to dress in neat clothing that shows respect for the school environment. CLOTHING WHICH STAFF AND ADMINISTRATION DEEM INAPPROPRIATE WILL NOT BE PERMITTED: 1) Clothing with obscene or objectionable writing and/or pictures is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, promoting or advertising tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs, or sexual activity. 2) Attire that attracts undue attention is unacceptable. This includes, but is not limited to: a) baring midriffs or having underclothing visible, tops/shirts must reach the top of pants, excessive amount of legs being visible; b) all tops must have sleeves extending from the shoulder hem except in Phy Ed courses and c) make-up that is distracting or excessive. 3) Shoes or sandals must be worn at all times. 4) Hats and other headgear/bandanas are prohibited and are to be removed before entering the building. * The right to establish a dress code may not be restricted even by a dress code arrived at by a majority vote of students.
