5. Consideration of approving Juneteenth as a paid holiday for those employees regularly scheduled to work on that date in light of the recent amendment to State statute recognizing Juneteenth as a state holiday
Description:
Effective May 25, 2023, Governor Walz signed a law amending Minnesota Statutes section 645.44, subdivision 5, to recognize Juneteenth, June 19, as a holiday on which no public business may be transacted, except in the cases of necessity. This change was initially set to be effective starting in 2024, but was revised to become effective in 2023. This change will impact employees covered under contracts and collective bargaining agreements who were regularly scheduled to work on this date. This does not include individuals employed in temporary, non-contracted, or summer employment. I therefore bring a motion to recognize Juneteenth as a paid District holiday, starting on June 19, 2023.
