III.A. Montgomery Smith Wins Another Gold! Congratulations go out to Montgomery Smith for receiving top honors at the 2016 West Central Michigan Regional Scholastic Art Awards. At Kendall College of Art and Design, on Saturday, March 5, Montgomery will be presented with one Gold and one Silver Award for her artwork. Monty is being recognized for a prisma-marker work entitled “You Told Me I Could Fly,” for a gold award and work created in mixed media, watercolor & ink entitled “Trespassing,” for a silver. Taking a gold award two years in a row in this prestigious competition is an amazing achievement and speaks highly of Montgomery’s artistic abilities. The Scholastic Art Exhibit at Kendall College of Art and Design opened February 9th and will be open to the public until March 5th.

III.B. The East Lansing Junior Black Student Union will host “A Walk in Black History” poster presentation from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 23 in the foyer of MacDonald Middle School, 1601 Burcham Drive. Students have created the tri-fold displays, adviser Darryl Pettway said, to help educate the community about untold and unrecognized people in black history. All students, parents, administrators, teachers, staff and community members are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

VIII. Public Comment: This is the opportunity to address the Board. Speakers are to confine their remarks to three minutes. If a speaker requires more than three minutes, after all other persons who have requested to speak during this part of the meeting have spoken, that speaker will be allowed additional time. The Superintendent or other district staff may comment to clear up or avoid significant misunderstandings.

IX.A. Truck Purchase
Motion: The Board of Education approve the purchase of a 2016 Ford F-250 4x4 with plow for $29,063 as quoted through the State of Michigan MiDEAL extended purchasing program to be paid from the 2012 Capital Projects Fund. |
IX.B. Water Testing
Motion: The Board of Education accept the proposal for drinking water sampling and lead analysis from Materials Testing Consultants, Inc. in the amount of $26,200. |
IX.C. Policy 5202 - Social Media
Motion: The Board of Education approve policy 5202 as presented by the Policy Committee. |
IX.D. Use of Outside Vendors/Contractors for Sex Education Instruction
Motion: The Board of Education rescind Motion 15-16/013 and allow outside vendors/contractors in the delivery of its sex education curriculum after such vendors/contractors are first vetted and approved by the Sex Education Advisory Board (SEAB) and the SEAB recommended vendors/contractors are approved by the Board of Education. The SEAB is directed to advise the Board of Education at the beginning of every school year of the names of all outside vendors/contractors previously approved by the Board so there is an annual review by the Board. Effective February, 2016 |
