5.C. Approval of Academic Standards
Description:
State statutes require that school boards notify the parents/guardians of students enrolled in the school district of the student academic standards that will be in effect for the school year. Boards must provide the notice annually, prior to the beginning of the school term (September 1). The method of this notification is a local option. The school board must also annually include an item on the agenda of the first school board meeting of the school year (the first board meeting after July 1) that clearly identifies the student academic standards adopted by the board under section 118.30(1g)(a)1 of the state statutes that will be in effect for the school year. Information is enclosed.

7.A. Proposed Change to Exam Exemptions
Description:
At the onset of the 2022-2023 school year, school administration shared with students that we were returning to the pre-COVID expectations for earning a final exam exemption. Those expectations were 1) students must earn an A- in class 2) have five or fewer excused absences in class 3) have no unexcused absences during the semester and 4) not have any behavior incidents that resulted in an office-issued consequence. These expectations were strictly enforced during both semesters. Concerns regarding a return to these expectations were brought forth to administrators, and subsequently, the school board precipitated a review of these exam exemption expectations. A committee of 7 staff members convened to review Waterford Union High School’s final exam exemption criteria and other high schools’ practices regarding final exam exemptions. Feedback from students was also considered. Based on the difficulty of creating consensus around final exam exemption criteria, the change in the weight of the final exam in a student’s final grade, and the commitment to the PLC process, the administrative team decided to end the practice of offering final exam exemptions. When surveyed at the end of the school year, the Waterford Union High School staff voted to end final exam exemptions immediately instead of phasing out over several years. |
8. Items For Board Action
|
8.A. Revisions to Employee Handbook Requiring Board Action
Description:
Background: The Employee Handbook serves as a vital resource for all school district employees, providing essential guidelines, policies, and procedures that govern their rights, responsibilities, and working conditions. As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering a supportive and equitable workplace, it is necessary to periodically review and update the handbook to reflect changes in laws, regulations, and organizational needs.
Revisions in need of board action: Page 46 Eliminate the requirement for the MMR vaccination upon hire. While vaccinations have proven to be effective in preventing and controlling infectious diseases, it is essential to acknowledge that mandatory vaccination policies can raise concerns for certain individuals. These concerns may stem from personal beliefs, medical reasons, or religious convictions. Page 66 Removal of the requirement for employees to pay for the cost of health care while on FMLA leave. When an employee takes FMLA leave, it is often due to serious medical reasons or family-related situations that require their attention. During these challenging times, employees may face financial strain, and adding healthcare expenses on top of that can be burdensome. By removing the cost burden of health care during FMLA leave, employees can focus on their well-being or that of their family members without worrying about additional financial stress. Page 121 Increase pay for teachers to $28 per period when using a prep or supervision period to cover for a teacher not in the building in the absence of a substitute.
