Discussion:
Bromm & Associates reviewed the current bills of interest to us. LB 851 bill was meant to raise teacher salaries not they way it sounded. LB 997 testimony, they want to make amendments to the bill. Envision this bill stay in committee. Senators have been told to keep bills in committee in not ultimately important. LB 651 bill third grade reading bill has an amendment to it. Continue to educate on those efforts. They have eased up on the retention side of the bill but now include interventions, summer school, etc. LB 803 bill hearing went well. They are talking of an amendment to this bill and try to narrow the focus. They think will have the votes to get it out of committee. This will allow NDE to exempt entities in certain cases that having hardship. LB 947 - Govenors tax bill, properties cuts. Decrease the top income tax rates. LB 829 Erdmans property tax relief (ballot initiative). If this doesn't pass they will put it on the ballot with no set way to give those tax relief. This will cause urban against rural issues. LB 944 - Governors proposal for 2% budget cuts for this year and a 4%, still remain a possibility. LB 944 - deficit appropriations bill. There is a possibility of more funds that would cause a windfall. Some approriations are uncomforatble with some of the changes that are proposing. Universities are worried about continued cuts to the university system. Next year will be the time to start advocating for more state funds. Begin working on this in May. LR285CA this would be the elimination of the NDE Board. The hearing has not yet been set. LB1001 - financing of schools. This allows NDE to study school financing and report back in 2019. This hearing is on February 5, 2018. The last time the study was done was 1988. LB 998 - Mental Helath hearing has not been set yet. Be prepared for questions on
