                            I am writing to express my strong concern and
disappointment regarding the decision to cancel the Advanced English class for
freshmen who have demonstrated that they are ready for an accelerated level of
coursework.

I have a difficult time understanding how removing an advanced academic
opportunity from students who have worked to qualify for it can be considered an
equitable solution.

These students have already been through a challenging academic experience; as
8th graders, those who persevered, succeeded, and demonstrated that they were
capable of this level of work should now be rewarded with the opportunity to
continue moving forward—not placed back into a standard course because the
school cannot currently fund the advanced option.

I understand budget decisions have to be made, but supporting one group of
students should not require holding another group back.

There is an important distinction between equity and equality. Equity should
mean giving students the resources and opportunities they need to succeed at
their individual level. It should not mean slowing down students who are ready
to advance in an effort to bring everyone to the same place. Students learn at
different rates, have different abilities, and have different academic needs.
That is not a failure of the education system—it is simply reality.

I am asking the administration and this board to reconsider this decision and
explore every possible option for maintaining the Advanced English course for
these freshmen. If funding is truly the issue, I would also appreciate
transparency regarding what alternatives were considered before removing this
opportunity from students.

I hope the district will reconsider the impact this decision has on these
students—not just academically this year, but on their motivation, confidence,
and willingness to continue challenging themselves throughout high school.
